02 - WHY KERALA THIS ONAM

Why travel to Kerala this Onam?

Because some celebrations are best experienced where they began.

Festival & healing, together

Celebrate Onam. Restore yourself while you do.

Onam and Ayurveda at Madukkakuzhy Ayurveda

Onam is Kerala's harvest festival — ten days of flower carpets, feasts and music, welcomed by everyone regardless of faith. You don't need to be from Kerala to belong here; you just need to arrive.

But this is more than a festival stay. It falls in Kerala's season of deep healing, so your days are shaped as much by Ayurveda as by celebration — daily doctor consultations, authentic treatments, yoga and sattvic meals, guided by a family that has practised Ayurveda for nine generations, since 1938. You leave lighter than you came.

Pookalam
The intricate carpet of fresh flowers laid at the entrance each morning of Onam.
Onam Sadya
A grand vegetarian feast — many dishes served the traditional way on a banana leaf.
Panchakarma
Ayurveda's signature cleansing and rejuvenation therapy, tailored to your body.
Dinacharya
The Ayurvedic daily rhythm — early mornings, yoga, mindful meals and rest.

04 - THE EXPERIENCE

WHAT YOU'LL EXPERIENCE

Everything that makes
an Onam unforgettable.

Each day is shaped around a real tradition — not a staged show. Slide through what your stay holds.

01 · The Welcome Ritual

Athapukkalam · The floral carpet

Every morning of the festival begins on the ground, quite literally. Guests and staff — dressed in traditional Kerala attire — gather around a bare circle and layer fresh, vibrant petals into intricate concentric patterns, ring by ring. Marigold, jasmine and green leaves are sorted by colour and pressed into shape by many hands at once. It's a slow, meditative and deeply social ritual: newcomers are shown where to begin, conversation flows, and by the time the last petal is placed the whole group has made something together — a carpet that welcomes prosperity and marks the auspicious start of the day.

02 · Folk Performance

Pulikali · The tiger dance

When the drums start, the courtyard transforms. Pulikali is Kerala's exuberant tiger dance — performers painted head to toe in bold tiger and leopard stripes, prowling and leaping in imitation of the big cats. Driven by the thundering rhythm of the chenda and other percussion, the dancers stalk, pounce and play to the crowd in a display that is equal parts athletic and comic. It's the loudest, most high-energy moment of the celebration — impossible to watch quietly, and guests are always pulled in to clap along with the beat.

03 · Dress & Immersion

Traditional dress setting

To help you step fully into Kerala's cultural world, authentic festival attire is provided and yours to wear throughout the day — the elegant white-and-gold Kasavu saree for women and the matching Mundu for men. If you've never draped a saree or tied a Mundu, there's nothing to worry about: our team assists each guest personally with styling, pleating and a comfortable, secure drape, so you feel confident rather than self-conscious. Dressed the part, you don't just attend Onam — you look and feel as though you belong to it, and the photographs are unforgettable.

04 · Sound of Onam

Onappattukal & folk melodies

Underneath every part of the day runs the sound of Onam. Traditional Onappattukal — the seasonal harvest songs of Kerala — and older folk melodies are performed live, carried by authentic local instrumentation. The music rises and falls with the celebrations: soft and soothing through the flower-carpet mornings, bright and rhythmic as the games and dances begin. It fills the grounds with an atmosphere that is joyful without being frantic, and it's the thread that ties the whole festival together from dawn to dusk.

05 · Team Game

Vadamvali · tug of war

Few games capture Onam's spirit of friendly rivalry like Vadamvali. Guests and team members split into two sides, take up opposite ends of a heavy rope, and dig in — heels planted, everyone pulling as one to drag the other team past the centre line. It's a test of strength, timing and, above all, coordination: the side that pulls together wins, not simply the stronger one. Laughter, cheering and a few good-natured collapses are guaranteed, and it's one of the fastest ways strangers here become a team.

06 · Festive Game

Musical chair

A timeless favourite that needs no explanation and delights every age. Players circle a ring of chairs while the festive music plays, everyone poised and grinning — and the instant it stops, they scramble for a seat. One chair is quietly removed each round, so the tension ratchets up and the near-misses grow funnier, until a single triumphant winner remains. Simple, inclusive and full of suspense, it's the kind of game that has the watching crowd cheering as loudly as the players.

07 · Traditional Game

Uriyadi · pot breaking

Inspired by the childhood mischief of Lord Krishna, Uriyadi is one of Onam's most thrilling games to watch and to play. A clay pot is suspended high from a rope, and a blindfolded participant is handed a wooden rod and gently spun before setting off. Guided only by sound, memory and the shouted — and often misleading — directions of the crowd, they swing for the pot while operators playfully raise and lower it just out of reach. The build-up of near-misses and the roar when the pot finally shatters make it a highlight every single time.

08 · Village Games

Additional traditional games

Between the headline events, the grounds fill with the small, nostalgic village games older generations of Kerala grew up on — pure, low-tech fun that sparks instant laughter. Favourites include Appam Kadi, where players try to bite a sweet bun dangling on a string with their hands tied behind their backs, and Balloon Chavitti Pottikkal, a frantic dash to stomp and burst your opponents' balloons while guarding your own. There's no skill barrier and no pressure — just friendly competition that gets guests and staff mingling and cheering side by side.

09 · Onam Generosity

Gifting & rewards

Generosity is at the very heart of Onam, and the celebration ends the way the festival intends — with giving. The winners of the day's games, along with special guests, are honoured with traditional handwoven Kerala garments and thoughtful mementos, presented as genuine tokens of appreciation rather than mere prizes. It's a warm, ceremonial close that leaves everyone — winners and participants alike — feeling valued, and sends you home with a keepsake of the day.

10 · Excursion

Local site visit

Onam is also the perfect season to step beyond the grounds and into the living landscape around you. A guided excursion takes you to nearby places of historical, cultural and spiritual significance — village temples and heritage architecture, quiet corners of local tradition, and the natural beauty of Kerala at its monsoon-washed, harvest-season greenest. It's an unhurried way to understand where you are, meet the community, and see the everyday Kerala the festival grows out of.
